GHAMSU beats Great Commission Church with 2 points to book the third spot in the Grand Finale

Ghana Methodist Students Union (GHAMSU) UG – Local, have booked their place in the Grand Finale of this season’s Inter-Church Bible Quiz, University of Ghana, by beating Great Commission Church International (GCCI) and Christ Apostolic Students & Associates (CASA).

Dubbed “the Final before the Final” by many, this contest was greatly anticipated because of the history of the three teams in the championship. GHAMSU was the first to qualify for the Semi Finals by beating LifeCity Church and Fountain Gate Chapel in the prelims. CASA and GCCI however, met before in the prelims, and it was a tied at 49 points at the end of all 5 rounds. The two were separated by a tie-breaking question which CASA won. GCCI still found their way into the semi-final being one of the highest scoring prelims losers, and the balloted to meet CASA again. Everyone of the three teams did have a point to prove, giving the contest a great headline.

It wasn’t a good day for CASA, who were tipped by many to carry the day. At the end of the first round, CASA had 4 points, GCCI followed with 5 and GHAMSU led with 8 points.

The second round was where it started to look like a two-horse race between GHAMSU and GCCI. CASA lost 2 points in round 2, ending with 2, GHAMSU followed with 10 points with GCCI leading with 11 points.

Round 3 was the test of the day. The test required the teams to mention in full 1 indicator each the priests used to confirm the presence of leprosy in 10 instances of persons or objects.
The teams brounght their game in this round. After 4 minutes of presenting their answers in this round, CASA scored 1, GHAMSU scored 5 points and GCCI scored 3, out of a possible 10. This brought the tallies to 3, 15 and 14 respectively – GHAMSU back in the lead with a point.

CASA tried to pull themselves back up in the fourth round, True or False but unfortunately, they were still short. GHAMSU scored 11 points to maintain their lead. At the end of the round, CASA had 10, GCCI 22 and GHAMSU 26, extending their 1 point lead to 4.

It was all down to a battle of wills, speed and accuracy in the fifth and final round, The Riddles.
GHAMSU answered the first riddle to extended their lead to 7. CASA answered the 2nd riddle on the 2nd clue to score 4 points, bringing their points to 14. There was still hope for GCCI to tie it up by answering the final 2 riddles right, with one at least on the 2nd clue. Unfortunately, no team could answer the 3rd riddle, and it was mathematically impossible for GHAMSU to lose at that point. GCCI did answer the last riddle on the first clue, reducing the GHAMSU lead from 7 points to 2, but there wasn’t anymore riddle to answer thereafter, making GHAMSU the winner of the contest.

At the end of the contest, GHAMSU won with 29 points, sending GCCI and CASA home with 27 and 14 points respectively.

With this, GHAMSU emerged our third finalist for the Grand Finale of the Maiden Edition of the Inter-Church Bible Quiz, UG-Legon.

A big Congratulation to the Team and The Church from the NBQ Team.
