The National Bible Quiz Championship is a Quiz Competition organized by NBQ Ghana in partnership with the Bible Society of Ghana, between Churches in Universities and other tertiary institutions.
The project began in 2021 as a question and answer game open to students on campus. In 2022, the first Staged Championship was held at the University of Ghana, dubbed – Inter-Hallls Bible Quiz. 18 Halls participated in the championship and the ultimate winner was Hilla Limann Hall. All contests happened at the Akuafo Hall Gardens and they were streamed on our Facebook page. After a very positive feedback, our second staged championship was held in 2023, this time with 24 Teams in total from Halls and Hostels at the University of Ghana. It was held at Akuafo Gardens and Political Science Car Park depending on which venue was available. While the 2023 Championship was ongoing, the Students Christian Council of the University of Ghana expressed interest in we organizing an Inter-Church Bible Quiz Competition for all the Churches on the University of Ghana Campus. So, the first Inter-Church competition for Univeristy of Ghana was held, involving 18 Churches, and the eventual winner was Deeper Life Campus Fellowship. The Prelims were held at Akuafo Hall Gardens, the Semi Finals at the Kofi Drah Conference Room, Political Science Department, and the Grand Finale at the Christ Hall, Anglican Church, University of Ghana. The Inter-Church Bible Quiz Championship for University of Ghana gathered interest from the chaplaincy of University of Cape Coast and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. After the Legon Championship, our Team moved to University of Cape Coast to hold their Inter-Church Championship for them. It was won by Evangelical Presbyterian Students. Due to time constraints with respect to the Academic Calendar of the Universities, we couldn’t hold the KNUST Championship. However, all 3 Chaplaincies agreed for us to consider a National Championship for the 3 Universities. At that point, NBQ Ghana was incorporated as an NGO Limited by Guarantee, to focus on organizing Quiz Competitions. Thankfully, the Bible Society of Ghana also noticed the project and came on board as a partner for the project, 2023 and beyond.
We put together various teams to handle aspects of the National Championship, and by God’s grace, our first National Bible Quiz Championship was held from the 4th – 9th September at the University of Ghana. It involved 27 Teams from 4 Universities – 9 each from KNUST and UCC, 8 from UG and 1 from UPSA. It gathered about 300 participants for the week-long duration, and over 200,000 online audience were reached through the livestreaming of various contests on Facebook.
The following sponsors came on board to help handle some of the costs associated with the 2023 National Championship –
Sweet Muzic Pro Audio – It’s a business owned by our Team Lead – Pastor Abraham Robert Asiedu. Ghana’s leading Musical Instrument Store, 5 branches across Ghana.
They provided the cost of purchasing logistics (Quiz desks & bells), sound equipment for all contests, a prize of a Bass Guitar to the eventual winner of the National Championship, and money to support feeding and accommodation of teams for the quiz period.
Visal Re-insurance Brokers – They provided a cash prize of Ghc 5000 for the eventual winner
Promasidor – They provided some beverage items for breakfast for the teams
75th Anniversary Secretariat of University of Ghana – They got a discounted rate on accommodation for participating Teams
Sunny TV – They covered all the contests, and are set to show them on their TV Station in a 13 week season from December
Sweet Melodies Fm – They gave radio publicity and interviews to winners and NBQ Team after the championship
Bible Society of Ghana – Their partnership elevated the status of the Quiz. They gave 130 Bibles which covered all contestants, and they are looking to support us with some cash as well.
We are grateful for the support we received; however we still had some costs left after the project.
Looking forward to 2024 –
We have received requests from many more Universities and Tertiary Institutions who want to participate in the next Championship. We have also noted that many alumni of these campus Churches have taken keen interest in the championship, as well as their mother Churches. We believe that this project is reaching a highly profitable target audience, and any sponsor who comes on board will reap great rewards for their products and services.
